Running creative brainstorms to get the best out of your ideas

Case Study

BBC entertainment

The Brief
Matt Tombs, Editor Development Strategy, asked us to create a workshop for the BBC Entertainment team to brainstorm ideas for new Quiz programmes.

The Project
We designed a creative session which helped them to avoid the obvious ideas and to think differently about quizzes

Initially I gave Karen a quite generic brief around the brainstorm, knowing that she would soon realise what some of the key issues and challenges were once she started speaking to the relevant commissioners and producers. The proposal she can then came back with was full of spot on ideas and inventive approaches, and it was good fun working together to evolve it further into the eventual session.

Running the session on the day is never going to be an easy gig … creative people love to speak and keeping them on track and to schedule is a big challenge … a challenge which Karen managed brilliantly! The session was bright, lively and purposeful, and the energy in the room was well managed and channelled. I had great feedback after the session from the participants praising both its design and running, and the quality of the top line ideas to come out it.

The Network – Edinburgh Television Festival brainstorm day

The Brief
The team who run the Network and Fast Track training schemes at the Media Guardian Edinburgh International TV festival asked us to create a morning workshop for them to rethink their vision and mission statements, who they are and what they do.

The Project
We designed a creative session which led them through the process of working out what they want to achieve. Time out of the office as a team can be invaluable in helping you create brilliant new ideas or projects.

I approached Karen with an idea of what I wanted to get from my team, but I wasn’t sure how to get it! Karen brought my priorities into focus and worked out what was realistic given the time frame. As a facilitator she brought great energy to the session and really opened up everyone’s thinking.

Karen made sure the session stayed on track and that the outcome was 100% action driven. Everything she does is steered towards bringing clear practical benefits to your team. Her can-do, positive attitude gets results!
